Pantanal

The Pantanal is the largest continental wetland area in the world. There are approximately 210,000 km2 spread across three countries in South America: Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil, this area is equivalent to 10 times the size of the Everglades Park in the USA. Most of this plain (approximately 140,000km2) is in Brazilian territory. Due to its geological profile that provides a pulse of water, the Pantanal has two very distinct seasons annually, the dry and the full. It is considered one of the richest places in biodiversity in the world. This ecosystem has the highest density of wildlife in the Americas, compared to the savannas of Africa.

The Pantanal is part of the Upper Paraguay Basin, with the Paraguay River as its main means of draining excess rainwater. Within this ecosystem it is possible to find about 650 species of birds, 95 of mammals, 260 of fish and 50 of reptiles, being an important refuge for some populations of endangered animals such as the jaguar, the deer -wetland, the giant anteater and the hyacinth macaw.

From November onwards, with the beginning of the rainy quarter in the upper regions of the hydrographic basin, the level of the rivers rises, causing floods in the plains. In May, the rains stop and the waters begin to slowly recede.

In the flooded lands, innumerable streams and ebbs are formed and a great number of fish is retained in lagoons and bays. The abundance attracts many birds in search of food, forming a beautiful spectacle. It is this movement that guarantees the maintenance of the species and makes the Pantanal a special and unique place.

You can visit the southern part of the Pantanal, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, or the northern part, in the state of Mato Grosso. The two parts are close to the capitals of each state.
